PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS PIECE OF MUSIC

About ten years ago I heard for the first time an aria sung by Lucia Popp. Since then, she has been my favorite classical singer. I can't really say why because my technical knowledge of music is scant. I just love to hear her singing.

Lucia Popp's voice can go very high up but to me there is a difference with most other opera singers: even on top, she remains melodious, there is spare room and she never becomes the screechy slate pencil voice you hear so frequently.

Here, Lucia Popp is singing Laudate Dominum out of Vesperae Solemnes de Confessore from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. When he composed this piece of music, Mozart must have been very young, about 20 or so. If I had faith and were a believer I would say Mozart was divinely inspired when writing this piece of church music.

Last not least, I would like to say thank you to YouTube that made all this possible and to the British chappie Glenmed who posted the recording. On his personal page Glenmed explains "I try to avoid present-day teenager dum-dum stuff". God bless England and the English, may they never loose their splendid sens of humor.

  1. Well, I'm not religious but religious music, especially choirs, is my favorite music after opera and Popp is incredible.

BTW My suggestion for Wodehouse would be the Blandings Castle books.

  5. Hi Georg,

I guess I will have to wait a bit more to hear this. My audio has packed up. I tried putting it back, almost succeeded, but a wrong polarity connection led to a bit of smoke, and a very tiny "blast"!

I would like to have your comments on this music. Simply because it is so totally different from yours and also from the Western Pop you seem to know.

  7. I'm agree with Frieda too. It was so comforting for me while listening at the end of a working day, tired of job, missing Rozaan and counting minutes for time to left.

  8. Bonjour Somi,

Glad to hear from you and I am glad, too that you appreciate this kind of music. I mean Mozart is so far from Iranian music.

Splendid, I only hope it is true. People from the East are so terrible polite and as far as I know mostly don't like to say "I don't like, I don't appreciate, I don't understand."

Well, I only hope you'll read this and comment again (without any eastern politeness).

  9. Hi again George. you must be a psycologist but in this case you are wronge ;) Easterns are polite but it doesn't make any differance in my favorite type of music. Generally I like calm music which lets u concentrate on your daily job and bring peace in your mind. Only while I'm driving in the afternoon or in traveling I prefer listening pop or other rap(new types which everyone loves).
Something more, I think you don't know much about Iraninan classic music and instrument. you should listen to some pieces of Shajarian or Shahram Nazeri which are singing and using 3Tar & Santoor. Very old and very nice ones.
I don't have anything available on the net, you can find them on you tube if u wish.
    Have fun.
